Have you ever experienced knowing you need to do something without knowing why? That the feeling is so compelling that you must follow through and have faith that it is the right path for you? I’ve had these experiences several times in my life and some I have followed and some I have not. When I didn’t follow them everything stayed the same, ho-hum. When I followed the knowing beautiful things happened for me.
Last night I watched the movie “Field of Dreams”, I hadn’t watched in a many years and wanted to watch it again to refresh my memory of the details that led to the final scene. In the movie the main character, Ray Kinsella, feels compelled to first build a baseball field in his corn field, then go find Terence Mann and take him to a ball game. They both receive a sign to find an ex-ballplayer, ‘Moonlight’ Graham. Ray does all of this without knowing why while at the same time he’s going bankrupt and about to lose his farm. In the end his dad, also an ex-ballplayer who has passed away, visits with Ray on the ball field. Ray gets the chance to make amends with his dad, something that had been burning at him for years.
What we can glean from “Field of Dreams” is to follow our passion, following those moments of knowing what we must do no matter what, and to believe that the path that is laid out for us is the right one. Yes, sometimes we take a detour but when we realize we took the detour we can get back on our path.
I recently came across this analogy: Minds are like parachutes they only work when open.
So keep your mind and heart open to those compelling feelings and follow them through and they’ll lead you to something amazing, and like Ray Kinsella you may have an adventure too.
